Do you have a purpose?

Do you have a purpose, this just happens to be another Todd-ism. It seems like a very simple question but when posed to the average unsuspecting person they rarely have an answer. Just today I asked one of my employees if they had a purpose and the reply was, yes all I want to do is pass Spanish. The question seemed to peak his interest and he asked me what my purpose was and I said that actually I have my purpose written down. The employee could not believe that I had actually written my purpose down and he then said I want to see it.

I do have my overall purpose written down and displayed on my desk, so that I can read it often and hopefully apply it to my every day life, so I went to my desk and pulled it down and by this time a crowd had gathered to read my purpose. So I think at this point I will share it with you as well…

Success means to love God with all my heart and to be faithful to what He has called me to do in life; to help bring out the best in others as I seek to win in every endeavor; and to value who I am, as a unique individual made in the image of God and to strive to reach my highest potential in life for the glory of God.

This is my purpose, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, to strive to reach my highest potential in life for the glory of God. I found this quote years ago from a short book on success written by none other than the founder of Church of the Nations, David Cooper. David wrote a book named The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, very short book of only about 100 pages and an easy read but loaded with great ideas about how to be a successful Christian in today’s world. (I can’t seem to find it on the internet anywhere I was going to include a link to purchase it but could not find it…sorry)

It’s interesting to me that through knowing what my purpose was I was able to minister to 4 or 5 of my employees. They all read my purpose statement and none of them knew what to say. Isn’t it interesting how putting your focus on God can take the focus off of you and place it exactly where it should be, on God. You see I think they thought I was kidding about having my purpose in life written down and I am guessing that they werent’ expecting to see what I showed them.

At any rate, do you know your purpose, is it clear to you and could or would you be able to share it with someone at moments notice. I am finding the older that I get how important it is to have a word ready in and out of season. If you don’t know your purpose in life I want to encourage you to first seek God and ask him to help you determine your overall purpose and then write it down and be prepared to live it daily. Life is to short to just wander through with no purpose, now is the time to take charge of your destiny.

Winston Churchill said, “Success is going from one failure to another without losing your enthusiasm.”

  1. Wow preach it brother! That was great! How many of us have that clear of a vision of what our purpose is? And you are so right, that it makes us more effective for the kingdom if we would seek God and focus! Thanks for the encouragement!
